Abstract
Background: Fine motor skills play a foundational role in overall cognitive development, with growing evidence suggesting their particular importance for mathematics achievement.
Aim: The primary objective of this study was to investigate the predictive relationship between fine motor skills and mathematics achievement in Iranian School-Aged Girls .
Materials and Mehods: In this cross-sectional quantitative study, 100 female students from Islamshahr, Iran, were selected through convenience sampling. Fine and gross motor skills were assessed using the short form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP), and math performance was determined using the students' average math grades.
Results: Pearson correlation showed significant positive correlations were found between math performance and both fine motor skills (r = 0.437, P=0.001) and upper limb coordination (r = 0.372, P=0.001). Conversely, gross motor skills showed no significant correlation (P = 0.178). Regression analysis further indicated that fine motor skills were the sole significant predictor of math performance (β = 0.442, P =0.001), accounting for 19.6% of the variance (R² = 0.196).
Conclusion: Overall, fine motor skills appear to be associated with mathematical achievement in children. These findings suggest that integrating fine motor development into educational curricula, particularly during middle childhood, may support mathematical learning outcomes.
